The Helping Hands Food Pantry serves 25+ families per week that are either referred to us, or are members or regular attendees of Sunset Presbyterian Church. (For referral information, see Assistance Information.) Families are provided with a 3- to 5-day supply of groceries. Food selections consist of canned foods, oil, cereal, rice, beans, pasta, skillet meals, frozen or canned meats, bread, potatoes, fresh produce and dairy items. Some non-food items such as cleaning product and personal hygiene supplies are provided as available. Non-food items may become more available as donations by small groups in the church increase through the Adopt-A-Shelf program.
The Clothing Closet has gently used clothing selections, which vary from week to week. The Clothing Closet is available for all comers. Clothing sizes range from infant to seniors. The Helping Hands Pack the Pack backpack program provides weekend food to Beaverton School District students who are experiencing food insecurity. The packs are filled with wholesome, family friendly foods. The Community Garden is available for neighbors to rent garden plots for their home use or for distribution via the Helping Hands Food Pantry.
Community Action friends and members support Helping Hands by donating financially, through food drives, and by donating gently used clothing and shoes. Financial donations provide funds to purchase food from the Oregon Food Bank. Retail stores provide weekly food donations (bread, dairy and produce). We are also blessed with clothing donations from corporations within our community.
Helping Hands is powered by volunteers who desire to follow the example of Christ by serving others:
For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me. Matthew 25:35-36 (NIV)
Helping Hands Food Pantry is an authorized emergency food agency of the Oregon Food Bank (OFB) and conforms to the Policies and Procedures of the OFB. Helping Hands Food Pantry and Clothing Closet is a program of Community Action and an equal opportunity provider.
